What attracted you to join the William Buck Graduate Program?
My path was slightly different from the usual or standard Grad pathway. I originally interviewed and joined William Buck because I needed to do my Co-Op for AUT to complete my degree and William Buck was advertising at that time for a Co-Op internship type of role. Upon accepting the role, I ended up interviewing for Audit and Business Advisory at William Buck in separate interviews and received a graduate role offer with the Business Advisory team before I had completed my Co-Op.
How were you supported through the program?
I was greatly supported by my senior team, who still support me a lot today. I didn’t really have a buddy who showed me the ropes, as our senior left within a few weeks of me starting, so the more senior team members really stepped up to help me and coach me through my first year.
How has your career progressed over the last five years?
Steadily would be a good word to summarise it. Each year I have taken on more responsibility and new challenges. The progression has for the most part felt quite natural, e.g. things haven’t been given to me too early where I feel like I’m not ready for it, and I also haven’t felt like I’m stuck working at a level that I am beyond. The progression has been quite linear with my progress in my CA studies too.
Where do you see your career going in the next five years?
I can see a lot of potential for me to move into a more senior/management position in the coming years if that’s something I want to pursue. I think that is a strong possibility if I stay with William Buck. There is another part of me that realises how much I have learned and gained from working here, and I think about how those skills would apply in other industries and jobs that are non-accounting related – which might also be something I wish to pursue for my future career.
What’s the best thing about working at William Buck?
Flexibility and the culture. Personally, I love the working arrangements that I have created within my team. Being able to work from home is great as I live a fair way from the office. I also love that I can pick and choose my hours (to a degree) when I am in the office. Being able to start early and finish early makes a world of difference. Secondly, what I mean when I say “the culture” is really the people. I feel like everyone is on the same page, and there is a genuine warm feeling you get when you turn up to the office. The people here make me feel like they care about me and my needs.
