All R&D Applications for the year ending 30 June 2021 (FY21) and beyond will need to be prepared and lodged through AusIndustry’s new Research & Development Tax Incentive (R&DTI) Customer Portal. The portal is designed to make applying for the R&DTI quicker and easier for all involved, however it requires some initial set-up.
To prepare and lodge a R&D Application in the portal, your R&D consultant will need your principal authority or authorisation administrator to log into the ATO’s Relationship Authorisation Manager (RAM) with their myGovID and authorise portal access to your R&D consultant (or to William Buck if we are your R&D consultants).
A principal authority must be listed as an eligible individual associate under your ABN in the Australian Business Register (e.g. a Director, Partner, or Public Officer) before you can access the portal or provide access to anyone else. Please note that all of your staff involved in the review of the R&D Application must create and validate a myGovID before they can be authorised to access the portal. Additional guidance can be found at Customer Portal Help and Support.
Along with the new portal, the R&D Application itself has changed, with the previous questions focused on new knowledge and the unknown outcomes now referring to the core R&D activities being claimed, rather than the overall project. Word counts on most questions have been increased and some sections have been separated to encourage more detailed and granular answers that describe and highlight the experimental activities and scientific process undertaken during the year.
Note that although the portal is currently available to allow companies to get familiar with and prepare R&D applications, the first lodgement for FY21 R&D claims can only be made from 5 July 2021.
