Tuff Group Holdings (Tuff Group) has received grant funding with the help of William Buck to build the nation’s first synthetic turf recycling facility.
Tuff Group received $500,000 in grant funding, the maximum grant amount, through Sustainability Victoria’s competitive Recycling Victoria Business Support Fund to support the project.
The company engaged William Buck (VIC) to assist with preparing and lodging its grant application and supporting documents.
Sustainability Victoria’s generous funding means that Tuff Group, Australia’s largest supplier and installer of synthetic turf, will now be able to fast track its plans to build the nation’s first synthetic turf recycling facility, which is expected to recover 98% of the raw materials from used artificial turf for repurposing and redistribution.
Based in regional Victoria, this 100% sustainable end-of-life processing plant will support the local and state economy through the creation of new jobs and create a new service offering providing businesses with a low cost, ethical alternative to using virgin materials.
The grant is a game changer for Tuff Group and a direct contribution to Australia’s goal to be an environmentally conscious nation. This new recycling disposal solution for synthetic turf is expected to bolster the growth of and social perception of the synthetic turf industry as the project will influence industry and individual behavioural change to achieve a circular economy.
Specifically, as a result of this project, a significant portion of turf waste expected to be disposed of in landfills in the next 5-8 years will be recycled and reused, reducing the heavy burden on most metropolitan landfill sites.
As the use of synthetic grass continues to gain a wider appeal in Australia in both commercial and residential applications, including sports arenas, school football fields, and residential lawns, the ability to recycle it will become increasingly important as Australia experiences growing demand for the product.
This steady increase in popularity is largely due to the turf’s low maintenance, drought resistance and durability both indoors and outdoors, with synthetic turf being up to three times more durable than natural solutions.
