Beckham McTaggart’s graduate story

By William Buck

What attracted you to join William Buck?

As a university student, I sought an opportunity to gain firsthand experiences and stay ahead of others in my group. I had heard of William Buck and its reputation as a top tier account firm that supports graduates, which led me to believe that they would be able to support me throughout my studies and help me to develop a career.

They offered me a perfect blend of academic support and practical experience, allowing me to apply my theoretical knowledge learned at university to real-world scenarios. While university provides a strong foundation, nothing compares to the hands-on experiences I have had at William Buck.

What have you gotten out of the role with William Buck since joining?

My experiences at William Buck have been a major highlight of my career. I have had the privilege of working closely with professionals to further develop my skills since becoming a graduate. William Buck has provided valuable training opportunities, including lunch and learn sessions where we discuss real world scenarios and effective strategies for addressing and overcoming challenges.

The firm’s support and encouragement for my CA studies have been truly inspiring. I have benefited from the insights and advice of colleagues, who have shared their past experiences and provided me with learning opportunities. One of the most rewarding aspects of working at William Buck is the genuine care and commitment to personal and professional growth. The firm prioritises my development and creates a supportive environment for me to thrive.

How have you been supported at the firm?

I had the chance to attend William Buck’s Graduate College, which was a unique opportunity to collaborate with fellow graduates from all over the country. This interstate experience allowed me to work in a collaborative environment, learn from other people’s perspectives and then apply both soft and technical skills I learned over the course of the three-day college to my work.

How do you see your career progressing?

I aspire to continue my career within the Business Advisory team at William Buck, progressing on a pathway towards becoming a Senior Accountant or higher. This will allow me to work through my CA studies while also being able to work on increasingly more complex accounting tasks, apply my knowledge and skills to overcome challenging projects and diversify my experiences and professional growth opportunities.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

In the next five years, I aim to progress to a more senior role, such as a Senior Accountant or Supervisor. By then, I am aiming to have completed my CA qualification, which would allow me to tackle more complex client engagements and leverage my skills and past experiences to continually contribute to the team.

What is the best thing about working at William Buck?

The supportive work culture at William Buck has been a highlight so far. Everyone is friendly and was willing to assist, particularly during my early days as a graduate. The management team and senior leaders are approachable, always open to questions and happy to provide guidance and strategies that help me overcome challenges.
